AI Update: AI Replacing Radio DJs, Multiple ChatBots available in Poe from Quora, Growing A Business Online
While the impact on jobs doesn't sound as desparate as it initially did each week I am seeing new industries evolving. This week it's Radio.
Radio Broadcasters Sound Off on Artificial Intelligence: Will AI Replace Human DJs?
The rise of AI in the radio industry sparks debate among broadcasters
Artificial intelligence (AI) has been making its presence felt across various industries, and the radio industry is no exception. Recently, a radio station in Oregon made history by becoming the first in the country to use an AI DJ for an entire shift. This development has sparked a lively debate among radio broadcasters about the implications of AI in their industry.
The Skeptics:
At a recent radio conference in Dallas, Texas, many broadcasters expressed skepticism about the presence of AI in their industry. Shawn Tempesta, a host for 102.7 VGS in Las Vegas, Nevada, voiced concerns about the potential mass extinction of jobs due to AI.
He warned against turning a blind eye to the possibility that AI could replace human DJs, stating, "To pretend that AI is not going to be a mass extinction event for jobs in this country, be it radio or anything else, you're fooling yourself."
Jessica Bonilla from Mix 105.1 in Orlando echoed these concerns, highlighting the tendency of companies to opt for cheaper and faster alternatives. She emphasized that if companies find a way to do a job more efficiently, they will likely choose AI over human DJs.
The Worries:
Cory Dylan from 100.7 KFBG in San Diego expressed concerns about identity theft in the context of AI. She emphasized the importance of contracts protecting broadcasters' voices, stating, "It is my voice and it's the way I choose to use it." While she acknowledged assurances from AI companies that they won't misuse voices, she remained skeptical about their intentions.
The Optimists:
Not all radio creatives view AI as a threat. Toby Knapp from 97.1 WASH-FM in Washington, D.C., believes that AI won't replace radio jobs but rather make them easier. He emphasized the need for talent to embrace technological advancements and use them to their advantage. Knapp cited the benefits of using AI for tasks such as writing blog posts, interview preparation, and news curation.
Dan Anstandig, the founder and CEO of Futuri, a tech company specializing in broadcast-focused software, sees AI as a solution to industry layoffs and cutbacks. Anstandig believes that AI can bridge the gap between consumer appetite and reduced human resources.
The Future of AI in Radio:
While AI has the potential to revolutionize the radio industry by generating more content and streamlining processes, concerns remain about the compensation and ownership of digitally altered voices. Broadcasters like Shawn Tempesta emphasize the importance of maintaining the human connection and companionship that radio personalities provide.
As AI continues to make inroads into the radio industry, the debate over its impact on human DJs rages on. While some broadcasters fear job loss and identity theft, others see AI as a tool to enhance their work. The future of AI in radio will ultimately depend on how broadcasters navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by this evolving technology.
Poe's New Desktop App: A One-Stop Shop for AI Chatbots
Quora's AI chatbot platform expands its reach with new updates
In the ever-expanding world of AI chatbots, finding the right one can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. But fear not, because Poe, the AI chatbot platform created by Quora, aims to be the one-stop shop for all your chatbot needs. With its latest updates, including a new Mac app, simultaneous conversations with the same bot, and access to Meta's Llama 2 model, Poe is solidifying its position as the go-to platform for AI enthusiasts.
The Web Browser for AI Chatbots:
As my colleague David Pierce previously noted, Poe's ambition is to become the web browser for AI chatbots. Quora CEO Adam D'Angelo, who also sits on the board of OpenAI, envisions a future where every company has its own bot to interact with the public. Poe aims to be the platform that brings all these bots together, creating a massive ecosystem akin to the web we know today. And with a subscription fee of $19.99 per month or $200 per year, users can have unlimited access to all the bots on the platform.
Expanding the Possibilities:
Poe's new Mac app offers a seamless experience, mirroring its web and mobile counterparts. Users can now chat with popular AI bots like OpenAI's ChatGPT-4 and Anthropic's Claude, all in one place. Additionally, Poe has introduced three new bots that provide access to Meta's open-source LLama 2 model, further expanding the range of AI capabilities available on the platform.
Enhanced Features and Functionality:
Poe's latest updates go beyond just aggregating AI chatbots. The platform now allows users to conduct multiple conversations with the same bot, making it easier to manage ongoing interactions. The explore page enables users to search for specific bots, ensuring they can find the right one for their needs. Moreover, Poe's language support has expanded to include Japanese, catering to a broader user base. Developers also have the ability to adjust the "temperature" of prompts, allowing for more varied or consistent bot responses.
Looking Ahead:
While Poe's enterprise tier is still under wraps, the platform's plan to offer a management solution for companies indicates its commitment to expanding its reach. With this upcoming feature, businesses will be able to harness the power of AI chatbots and customize their interactions to meet specific needs.
Poe's new desktop app and updates solidify its position as the leading platform for AI chatbots. By bringing together various bots under one roof, Poe offers users unparalleled convenience and access to cutting-edge AI capabilities. As the AI ecosystem continues to grow, Poe is positioning itself as the indispensable tool for navigating this ever-expanding landscape. So, whether you're a curious individual or a company looking to leverage AI, Poe's got you covered.
