Big annoucements coming out of Google I/O this week
Google Is Back In The Race It Seems
There was a flurry of announcements coming out of the Google I/O developer conference this week.
Their new PaLM 2 has several different specialized variations such as; Med-PaLM 2 focused on the medical knowledge, Sec-PaLM focused on security use cases, and a smaller model that can run on smartphones. Currently in testing, these models are reported to be very slow and only 20 tokens a second.
While we have said that size is less of a factor in the race, and improved transformers are going to be the key to improvements in the future, PaLM 2 is a 540-billion parameter model.
Google has been also very focused on support a large amount of languages in their development and research. PaLM 2 has been trained to support over 100 languages.
It comes in different sizes based on animals; Gecko, Otter, Bison, Unicorn, and the latest Gemini is currently in training.
Bard Is Out Of Beta
I got access to Bard a couple of weeks ago. Spent about an hour testing and it was ok. I still preferred GPT-4. It is now out of beta, and Google is adding some tools and integrations to compete with OpenAI.
One of the most interesting for me is integration with Adobe Firefly for creating images.
Abobe Firefly looks very promising, and very large amount of functionality in one package much like what I have seen within RunwayML. One of the key features that stands out is being able to create vector images and adjust kerning in generated custom fonts.
Text To Music With MusicLM
While Spotify has been removing a lot of AI music, Google has made MusicLM public. Basically, text to music with some restrictions to help prevent copyright issues. However, I think there are still possibly some issues for them down the road for the data used to train the Language Model which seems to be a common theme these days.
