Hiring A Chief AI Officer
Late Saturday night I added the following notes article to my Facebook profile after a number of podcasts and blog post rabbit holes.
I have included links to the sections of the podcasts using Snipd for your reference. Since posting I have had some interesting conversations with a few subscribers including Damien Zamora from GoMobile Solutions. The article provided him with some insights on the direction they need to take in order to get the most out of AI in their operations.
The Future Of Software Development
Ever tried to heal a paper cut by simply willing it away? If only our bodies could repair themselves at the snap of a finger, right? Well, the world of code is daring to dream just that. Drum roll please...the future of software development could well be self-healing code! That's right, folks. Imagine code that mends itself, much like Wolverine from the X-Men, but with fewer claws and more brackets.
Now, if you're like me and love automation, the rise of generative AI is music to your ears. It's like having a personal chef who can whip up delicious meals, then do the dishes and mop the floor afterward. But there's a catch – more dishes might mean more broken plates. As Forrest Brazeal, head of developer media at Google Cloud, warns, the quick production of large chunks of code can lead to a flood of quality control issues. It's like trying to inspect every grain in a silo of rice. It's overwhelming, to say the least. And with AI generating heaps of code, we're looking at new heights of technical debt. We're talking Mount Everest levels, folks. But hey, the view from the top should be worth it, right?
But fear not! The superhero movie isn't over. The expectation is that AI itself will eventually swoop in to save the day by checking the code for accuracy, security, and speed. It's like having a self-cleaning oven that also checks if your soufflé has risen properly. This could mean code that's not just self-healing, but also self-improving over time.
What's more, real-world examples of these technologies are already sprouting up like mushrooms after rain. Google, for instance, is using AI to speed up code review processes, reducing the time spent on code reviews by a significant amount. Picture a wise old mentor, constantly watching over your shoulder and pointing out where you can improve. But less annoying, and won't eat the last donut in the break room.
And the fun doesn't stop there. Some tech wizards are dreaming up a world where code can fix errors on the fly in a live environment. Imagine a self-healing code that's also self-updating, like a phone that not only fixes its own cracked screen but also upgrades its own hardware. Now that's what I call living in the future! However, for now, we still need humans in the loop. It's like we're co-piloting a spaceship with R2-D2. Sounds like a pretty cool gig, right?
And as we spiral further into this tech-filled future, we could even see AI reviewing and suggesting changes to old code to make it run more efficiently. It's like having a personal trainer for your code, constantly pushing it to get fitter, faster, and stronger. So, as we step into this brave new world of self-healing code, remember - the future is here, and it's got a pretty neat band-aid.
