Quora's Poe Introduces an AI Chatbot Creator Economy: A New Frontier for Bot Creators

Quora's innovative program monetarily rewards AI bot creators, opening up a new avenue for smaller companies and AI research groups to reach the public.

When you hear the term "creator," you probably think of individuals crafting content for social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube, or Instagram. But Quora's AI chatbot platform, Poe, is flipping the script by paying bot creators for their efforts. This groundbreaking program, which launched last week, is among the first of its kind to financially reward those building AI bots.

The monetization program offers two avenues for bot creators to generate income. First, if a bot leads a user to subscribe to Poe, the company will share a portion of the revenue with the bot's creator immediately. Second, bot creators can set a per-message fee, with Quora paying for every message. While the latter option is not yet available, it's set to roll out soon.

Quora, known for its Q&A site, introduced Poe to the general public earlier this year, allowing users to interact with a range of AI chatbots. Poe's content not only serves as a way for consumers to experiment with new AI technologies but also helps Quora evolve its Q&A site.

If the content generated by Poe's chatbots meets a high enough quality standard, it will be distributed across Quora, potentially reaching its massive user base of 400 million monthly visitors.

Poe has been gaining traction in the rapidly growing AI chatbot market. According to market intelligence provider Apptopia, Poe's mobile app saw over 18.4 million installs and nearly 1.22 million monthly active users.

However, in-app purchases alone generate less than a quarter of a million dollars per month. It's worth noting that many users may be accessing Poe via the web and opting for the subscription model there.

Quora's creator monetization program is currently available only to U.S. users and pays up to $20 per user who subscribes to Poe through a creator's bots. The program calculates this metric in various ways, such as if the creator brings a user to Poe for the first time, if a bot brings a user back to Poe who eventually subscribes, or if a bot's paywall is seen just before the user subscribes. Additionally, soon users will be able to send messages to bots at a price set by the developer.

This program not only enables smaller companies and AI research groups to create bots that reach the public without building their own AI chatbot applications but also serves as a way for Poe to attract new subscribers.

By essentially operating as an affiliate program, Quora hopes to better compete against other AI chatbot apps that are already generating significant revenue on mobile devices.

Quora CEO Adam D'Angelo expressed his excitement about the program, stating, "We expect all kinds of bots to do well, across areas like tutoring, knowledge, therapy, entertainment, assistants, analysis, storytelling, roleplay, and image, video, music, and other media generation."

He believes this marks the beginning of a new market with ample opportunities to provide valuable services to the world while making money.

Quora's move to monetize AI bot creators is an intriguing development in the tech industry. By recognizing and rewarding the efforts of these creators, Quora is not only fostering innovation but also paving the way for a new wave of AI-powered experiences.

As the chatbot market continues to grow, it will be fascinating to see how this program shapes the landscape and influences the future of AI technology.

It's clear that Quora's Poe is not just another chatbot platform; it's a gateway to a new creator economy, where AI bot creators can thrive and monetize their creations.

The possibilities are endless, and the impact on the tech industry could be profound. It's time for bot creators to seize this opportunity and shape the future of AI-powered interactions.

Dashtoon: Turning Storytellers into Comics Artists with AI

In the ever-evolving world of technology, there seems to be no limit to what artificial intelligence (AI) can achieve. The latest innovation to catch our attention is Dashtoon, a startup that aims to transform anyone with a story to tell into a comic artist, regardless of their drawing skills.

With its suite of generative AI tools and a publishing platform, Dashtoon is set to revolutionize the comic industry.

The Rise of Dashtoon:
Dashtoon's platform, called Dashtoon Comic Reader, has already gained traction with the release of about 30 commissioned comics. The startup plans to add nearly 1,000 new episodes every month, catering to the growing demand for digital comics.

By monetizing its freemium model, Dashtoon expects to generate $15,000 in revenue in its first month alone, with projections to reach $100,000 per month soon.

The Founders' Journey:
Dashtoon was founded in December 2022 by Sanidhya Narain, Lalith Gudipati, and Soumyadeep Mukherjee. Narain and Gudipati, who previously worked on Pocket FM's audio content platform, discovered the potential of comics while using them to promote serialized audio content.

Realizing the latent demand for digital comics, Narain immersed himself in the Korean comic ecosystem and saw an opportunity to leverage AI to simplify the comic creation process.

The Power of AI:
Dashtoon's AI Creation Suite, developed by CTO Soumyadeep Mukherjee, enables creators to transform their story ideas into digital comics. The platform's Dashtoon Studio allows creators to upload storyboards and choose characters from a library or generate images from uploaded photos and drawings.

This significantly reduces the time required to create an episode, from 40-50 hours to just 5-6 hours. Dashtoon's goal is to eventually reduce episode creation time to under an hour by adding AI-generated storyboards and dialogues.

Balancing Creativity and AI:
While Dashtoon relies on AI to generate storyboards and dialogues, the founders emphasize that creativity is still a human-driven process. The AI serves as a labor-saving tool, providing options and assisting creators in their artistic endeavors.

The platform grants creators complete control over their final product, ensuring that AI-generated content remains enjoyable and avoids the mechanical nature often associated with AI art.

Addressing Concerns:
The integration of generative AI into creative tools has raised concerns about the originality and copyright of AI-generated content. Dashtoon addresses these concerns by taking measures to prevent copyright infringement.

The platform seeds its character library with its IP and ensures that stories are either the creator's IP or Dashtoon's. The company also plans to train its foundation models in collaboration with data providers who adhere to copyright laws.

The Future of Dashtoon:
Dashtoon aims to differentiate itself from other digital comic distribution platforms by building a native creator community and focusing on long-form content in genres like romance, drama, and fantasy.

As the platform expands, it plans to include other genres within fiction, non-fiction, and short-form illustrated content. By providing an alternative to labor-intensive comics creation and distribution methods, Dashtoon is poised to disrupt the content industry.

Dashtoon's innovative use of AI to empower storytellers and democratize comic creation is a testament to the limitless possibilities of technology. With its AI Creation Suite and publishing platform, Dashtoon has the potential to reshape the way we consume and create comics.

As content consumption on mobile devices continues to rise, Dashtoon is well-positioned to lead the charge in the emerging wave of webcomics. The future of comics creation has arrived, and it's powered by AI.
