Meta AI Expands Capabilities with Reels Support and 'Reimagine' Feature
Meta AI introduces new features to enhance user engagement and generate AI images in group chats
In its ongoing quest to dominate the AI landscape, Meta AI (formerly Facebook) has announced a series of updates to its generative AI experience.
Among the new capabilities is the ability to create new AI images on demand and support for Reels, a feature that allows users to share visual examples in group chats.
The "reimagine" feature, as Meta AI calls it, enables users to recreate AI images with prompts in group chats. Users can generate an AI image with a prompt using Meta AI's virtual assistant and then pass it on to a friend who can add another text prompt to generate an entirely new image.
This back-and-forth process can continue as friends try to outdo each other with wilder ideas. The goal is to increase engagement time with Meta's apps as users explore the possibilities of these new AI capabilities.
To complement this feature, Meta AI has also launched Imagine with Meta AI, an online AI image generator. This free web tool allows users to create high-resolution AI images in a matter of seconds, further expanding the creative potential of Meta AI's generative AI experience.
But Meta AI's updates don't stop there.
The company has made its AI assistant more helpful by offering more detailed responses on mobile devices and more accurate summaries of search results. It can now respond to a wider variety of requests, making it a more versatile tool for users.
Support for Reels in Meta AI chat is another significant addition. Users can now ask Meta AI to recommend the best places to visit and share the Reels of those top sites and attractions in a group chat.
This feature enhances the visual experience and provides users with a more immersive way to explore and plan activities.
While these updates are rolling out starting today, Meta AI has hinted at many other AI tools currently in testing.
Over 20 new generative AI experiences are being trialed across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, covering various areas such as search, social discovery, ads, and business messaging.
Although consumers primarily interact with Meta AI through the chat interface, the AI powers several other features under the hood.
Meta AI's large language model (LLM) technology, for example, provides AI-generated post comment suggestions, community chat topic suggestions, search results, and enhanced product copy in Shops.
Meta AI is also exploring ways to leverage its AI capabilities to assist users in creating birthday greetings, editing Facebook Feed posts, drafting introductions for Facebook Dating profiles, and setting up new Facebook Groups.
Additionally, it aims to enable users to create and share AI-generated images on Facebook and improve search functionality for finding friends, Pages, Groups, and Marketplace listings.
For creators, Meta AI will suggest replies in DMs based on the conversation tone and content, streamlining communication and enhancing productivity.
As part of its image-generating abilities, Meta AI plans to introduce watermarked images, adding an extra layer of authenticity and protection to its AI-generated content.
Meta AI's recent updates indicate its commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI technology and providing users with innovative and engaging experiences.
With its expanding suite of AI tools, Meta AI aims to solidify its position as a leader in the AI landscape, offering users new ways to interact, create, and discover within its ecosystem.

Axel Springer Shuts Down Upday, Shifts Focus to AI-Based News
German publisher aims to leverage artificial intelligence for journalism
Berlin-based publishing giant Axel Springer has announced the closure of its news outlet, Upday, as part of its strategic shift towards AI-driven news generation.
The company plans to relaunch Upday as a "trend news generator" powered by artificial intelligence in the summer of 2024. This move reflects Axel Springer's ambition to explore the potential of AI in journalism and the news industry.
Upday, which has been pre-installed on Samsung cell phones and other devices since 2015, will cease operations in its current form by the end of this year.
The transformation process will result in job cuts, with the company evaluating the possibility of reassigning affected staff members to other positions within the group. Out of the original workforce of 150, only 70 employees will remain.
Axel Springer, known for owning popular German tabloids Bild and Welt, as well as U.S. political news website Politico, is actively transitioning from print media to digital news. The decision to close Upday and focus on AI-based news generation aligns with the company's broader digital transformation strategy.
The use of AI in journalism has gained traction in recent years, with news organizations leveraging machine learning algorithms to analyze data, generate news articles, and personalize content for readers.
While AI has the potential to enhance efficiency and scalability in news production, it also raises concerns about the impact on human journalists and the quality of news output.
Axel Springer's move to embrace AI-driven news generation reflects the broader trend in the media industry. As news organizations face increasing pressure to adapt to digital transformation and changing consumer preferences, they are exploring innovative technologies to stay relevant and competitive.
However, the success of AI in journalism will ultimately depend on striking the right balance between automation and human judgment.
The closure of Upday and Axel Springer's shift towards AI-based news generation highlights the evolving landscape of the media industry. As technology continues to reshape journalism, news organizations must navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by AI.
By embracing AI responsibly and preserving the core principles of journalism, media companies can leverage technology to deliver high-quality, relevant, and engaging news content to their audiences.
As Axel Springer embarks on this transformative journey, it will be interesting to see how its AI-driven news generator evolves and whether it can effectively meet the demands of today's digital news landscape.
The success of this venture will not only impact the future of Axel Springer but also serve as a case study for other media organizations seeking to harness the power of AI in journalism.
In an era of rapid technological advancements, the role of journalists and the future of news are being redefined. As readers, it is essential for us to critically assess the implications of AI-driven news generation and hold media organizations accountable for maintaining journalistic integrity and ethical standards.
The challenge lies in striking the right balance between innovation and the fundamental principles of journalism that have served as the cornerstone of a free and informed society.
