New AI shortcut to creating images in a consistent style & Latest on EU regulation
Style Drop from Google labs solving one of the problems with AI image generation...
This Will Make Consistent Images Much Easier
In collaboration with GoogleAI, Nataniel Ruiz and his team have introduced StyleDrop, a revolutionary tool that lets users generate new images following a specific style of their choice, using just a single style reference image.
StyleDrop has demonstrated remarkable capabilities in style translation and generation. It can extract and apply the color palette and overall style from a single reference image to generate a wide variety of unique, stylized images. One striking example is how the tool extracted the style from a watercolor cat painting and was able to reproduce that style in creating entirely different images. What's more, StyleDrop goes beyond simple color and pattern mimicry, demonstrating an adeptness at morphing object shapes to fit within the style reference and incorporating stylistic flourishes and geometrical style components.
The tool is also capable of handling 3D styles, capturing even the isometric viewpoints, rounded edges, layout, and color palette of a given style reference. Through a combination of StyleDrop and another tool, DreamBooth, it's possible to represent a specific subject in any chosen style, further expanding creative possibilities.
How It Works
Under the hood, StyleDrop employs MUSE, a masked Transformer for Text-to-Image Synthesis, which has proven effective at learning and reproducing styles. Following the approach set by DreamBooth, the team fine-tuned MUSE in a parameter-efficient manner using Adapters and carefully selected supervision text prompts. This approach gently guides the model, providing it with an initial prior.
The team introduced an innovative concept called Iterative Training from Feedback to enhance style consistency and recall while reducing content leakage. This process involves continued training of the model using high-quality synthetic samples, improving the results for other test-time prompts.
Benefits For Business Owners
One of the significant benefits of StyleDrop, particularly for business owners, is the level of creative control it offers. Through Iterative Training from Feedback, users can guide the design process with their own intentions, effectively allowing them to be their own digital artists.
From a business perspective, StyleDrop can be a game-changer. It could redefine how businesses create their brand images, product designs, advertising materials, and more. By giving business owners the ability to produce high-quality, stylistically consistent images on demand, StyleDrop could significantly reduce costs associated with hiring professional designers, and streamline the creative process, while still ensuring a unique and impactful visual identity.
Today, along with collaborators at @GoogleAI, we’re excited to announce StyleDrop! It allows a user to generate new images that follow a specific style of their choice given only a single style reference image 🤯 (Thread 👇)

EU Calling For Google and Facebook To Label AI Content
While we're still trying to figure out how to differentiate our Instagram filters, the European Union (EU) is urging tech giants Google and Facebook to label content generated by artificial intelligence (AI). We all know the EU has been at the forefront of regulating the tech industry, and it seems they're not ready to let go of the reins just yet.
The call comes as part of a wider effort to combat disinformation from Russia, which, if you've been following the news, has been a rather hot topic. The EU is not just asking for labels; they're also requesting more resources to be put into fact-checking, particularly in minority language content and in Eastern Europe, where Russian disinformation campaigns are a prevalent concern.
The EU's request specifically targets AI-generated content, wanting it labeled in a way that even the most distracted scroller can't miss. In other words, they want users to clearly see if a post is not produced by humans but by AI systems. Imagine seeing a label that says, "This is the robot talking" - feels like something out of a sci-fi movie, doesn't it? But it's an attempt to mitigate the potential "dark side" of AI, which can create fake events and voices within seconds.
But, as always, the devil is in the details. Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, when asked if they had the technology to detect fake news, responded with a cryptic "Yes, but we are developing technologies further". While this may sound promising, it's worth asking: what does "developing further" mean? And more importantly, can they keep up with the pace of disinformation spreading across their platforms?
Then there's the recent standoff with Twitter, which decided to quit the EU's voluntary code of practice, a move described as a "mistake" by Věra Jourová, a European Commission vice president. It's clear the EU is ready to bare its teeth, threatening "swift" sanctions if the social media giant doesn't comply with new digital content laws set to take effect on August 25.
The question remains - will Twitter acquiesce or face the potential fine of up to 6% of its global revenue or an outright ban across the EU?
Tech giants are often lauded for their innovative strides, but as they venture further into the realm of AI, it's crucial they take responsibility for the potential misuse of these technologies. Let's hope they can rise to the challenge and navigate this tricky path with the due diligence it deserves.
